May, 2023

From the Ground Up

I returned to a wide-awake vineyard that is not hurting for water. This could be one of the most interesting growing seasons ever. Good or bad, I’ll blame it on the weather.

September, 2022

From the Ground Up

I thought I left the heat behind 50 years ago when I moved from Delano in the San Joaquin Valley to Santa Maria. We are right in the middle of a major heat wave, which can be detrimental to grapes.

March, 2020

From the Ground Up
After beautiful December rains, we had a winter drought in January and February, but our forecast for the middle of March looks good. We should be finished pruning by then - one of the more important jobs that we do.

March, 2019

From the Ground Up

January, 2017

From the Ground Up
This time of the year, the vineyard is very dormant. Leaves have all fallen with the aid of some of the cold weather that we’ve had. We are busy pruning, praying for rain, and taking a good look at the nutritional needs of the vineyard. There is always something to do.

January, 2016

From the Ground Up
We started pruning in early December. It takes 35 workers about 90 days to prune our vineyards. It is one of the most tedious jobs that we do. Selection of the proper canes and spurs will determine what kind and what size of crop we have.

May, 2015

From the Ground Up
We are at the beginning of what could be our earliest season yet. Little rain and warm weather have pushed the grapes early. Of course, now that they’re out about a foot, we are spending our nights watching for frost. Fortunately, each night has been borderline, but we did need to be there in case temperatures dropped near daybreak. We’re really just babysitters of the vineyard.

March, 2015

From the Ground Up
We already have bud break taking place.  It’s not extensive but it requires us to be prepared for the frost which we’ve seen for the past four nights with lows of 28°F
