Solving the World in Solvang, One Glass of Wine at a Time!

By Kat Thomas Editor in Chief, Edible Skinny Dot Com

Some say a vacation isn't defined by the length of the distance you go, but the ability to allow yourself to step into another world. And with Covid severely restricting airplane expeditions, the day-trip adventure has become the way to hack travel in 2020. Which is why Edible Skinny delighted in voyaging to the perfect Los Angeles Stand-In for Europe: Solvang, CA. The trip might have been just two hours north of the City of Angels, but it sure felt like a world away.

Toccata - A Little Bit of Dust from the Dirtman

This is a critical time for sunshine, moderate to warm temperatures, not too much heat, and not too much fog. So far, everything is on track.

From the Ground Up

When we go through and hedge, we remove about a foot from the shoots which redirects the energy from the growth of the wine to caring for the grapes. It also tells the vine that we are reaching another level of maturity. I never read this in a book.

March, 2020

From the Ground Up
After beautiful December rains, we had a winter drought in January and February, but our forecast for the middle of March looks good. We should be finished pruning by then - one of the more important jobs that we do.

From the Ground Up

It has been a cool summer with sporadic heat and  morning fog. We don’t usually see fog past June but this year has been different. As a result, the crop is late by about 10 days.

Among other things, it takes a good winemaker to make a good Pinot Noir. Megan McGrath Gates has been the winemaker for Lucas & Lewellen Estate Vineyards since 2007. Her winemaking career was launched as an enologist for Flowers Vineyard & Winery on the Sonoma Coast, crafting Burgundian-style Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, while she earned a Certificate in Winemaking from UC Davis.

Toccata - A Little Bit of Dust from the Dirtman

This has been a cold, wet spring but we avoided frost on the new growth. Now we are hoping for some heat and no more rain. The grapes are trying to bloom and they are dragging behind, which could make for problems later.

Lucas & Lewellen's Quality Control

Quality Grapes Yield Quality Wines

Dennis Schaefer
Sept 6th, 2018
Santa Barbara News-Press

Louis Lucas is one of the folks who pioneered grape growing in Santa Barbara County, beginning with his partnership in the historic Tepusquet Vineyard. Back in those early days, planting a vineyard was seen as a risky business. There weren't very many wineries in the county and it wasn't yet clear if the bigger North Coast wineries would be willing to purchase grapes from such a supposedly warm area in Southern California.
